How to use the plan
Read the linked lessons, write down unfamiliar terms, complete the assignment, and review the result before moving on. For hands-on work, use suitable training hardware and the relevant product instructions. Keep observations, attempts, and verified demonstrations separate in your notes.
You can follow all ten modules to explore the trade or focus on the automotive sequence after building the shared foundations. Return to earlier modules whenever a new topic reveals a gap. Reading speed is not a measure of competence.
01. Know the trade and your role
Compare residential, automotive, and commercial work. Separate the tasks that interest you from the responsibilities you still need to understand.

Write a one-page learning brief: intended role, location, preferred work environment, current experience, and three open questions. Identify the official agency you need to consult.
You can explain the difference between a class certificate, professional certification, and government permission without treating one as a substitute for another.
02. Name the mechanical parts
Learn how a key, cylinder, latch or bolt, strike, and door form a working opening. Separate a symptom from the component you think caused it.

Using an instructor-approved demonstration lock and door, label ten components and explain each one’s role. Sketch the relationship between the cylinder and the rest of the lock.
Your description distinguishes the keyway from key cuts and the cylinder from the complete lockset. You can name what you observed before suggesting a repair.
03. Record an opening accurately
Use drawings, reference points, and explicit units to describe a training opening. Learn why a product name alone is not a compatibility check.

Make it practical
Create an opening record with dimensions, door swing, visible product identification, condition, and a marked drawing. Have another learner use only your record to explain the opening.
Another person can understand your measurement reference and viewpoint without guessing. Unknown dimensions are marked as unknown rather than estimated.
04. Understand keys and service choices
Distinguish blank selection, duplication, rekeying, and replacement. Explain what each task changes and what it leaves unresolved.

Compare three labeled training blanks and record the evidence that distinguishes them. For a worn-lock scenario and a lost-key scenario, explain which questions must be answered before proposing work.
You do not use head shape as your only blank identifier or propose rekeying as the automatic solution to a mechanical fault.
05. Practice diagnostic reasoning
Gather observations, form more than one hypothesis, and choose a check that distinguishes them. Record the conditions under which a symptom appears.

Complete the mechanical case in the workbook. Write an observation, two possible explanations, and a non-destructive next check. Ask a mentor to critique the reasoning.
Your proposed check produces useful evidence. Your notes clearly separate what is known, suspected, and still untested.
06. Map the automotive key functions
Identify the separate mechanical, remote, passive-access, and start-authorization functions. Build a habit of checking the exact application.

Build a function matrix for two instructor-supplied training fobs. List the vehicle and part information that is missing before either can be declared compatible.
You can explain why matching buttons, case shape, frequency, or an FCC identifier alone is not a complete fitment decision.
07. Learn electrical fundamentals
Connect voltage, current, resistance, and measurement conditions. Begin on suitable isolated classroom equipment before vehicle diagnosis.

Solve a low-voltage resistor-circuit calculation on paper. With an instructor, choose the correct meter mode and connections for a training-board voltage measurement. Record units and reference points.
You distinguish a voltage measurement from a current measurement and understand why a single static reading or a fault code does not establish the complete diagnosis.
08. Plan a programming job
Connect compatibility, documentation, tool coverage, professional access, power support, and agreed outcomes before a supervised procedure.

Draft a sample work order for adding a spare key. Include prerequisites, existing-key inventory, the specific supported function, authorization, and the post-work function checks.
Your plan identifies which information must be verified before starting and what evidence will establish completion. It does not assume a scanner’s success message replaces functional checks.
09. Think about access as a system
Study commercial hardware, mechanical key control, and electronic access as coordinated systems serving people and buildings.

For a fictional small office, define three roles and the doors each role needs. Keep the permission plan separate from any proposal for physical hardware or exit arrangements.
You can explain the difference between ingress permissions, mechanical egress, and the power-loss state of electrically controlled hardware.
10. Build a portfolio and choose the next specialty
Review the evidence of what you can explain, observe, and demonstrate with supervision. Use the gaps to choose the next class or work experience.

Make it practical
Assemble three anonymized practice records, a vocabulary list, one corrected mistake, and a plan for further training. Ask a qualified mentor to record which demonstrations they actually observed.
Your portfolio makes no unsupported claim of independent competence. Your next step is tied to a specific skill gap and a suitable place to practice.
Review your evidence
At the end of a module, record what you can explain, what you have observed, what you have attempted under supervision, and what an instructor has actually checked. Use those four categories when describing your progress to a prospective employer or training provider.
For a stronger review, ask someone to give you a slightly different example. A memorized answer may fit the original case; understanding lets you explain what changes when the conditions change. Record the correction when your first explanation turns out to be incomplete.
