A replacement key can resemble the original, fit a door, and still be wrong for the requested electronic functions. Compatibility is a conclusion supported by several matching facts. Before ordering or preparing a key, build a record that connects this vehicle, this replacement part, and the functions the customer expects. Actual selection and enrollment depend on current manufacturer information for the vehicle.
Separate the jobs hidden inside a key
Use precise names when discussing what must work. A blade is the shaped metal component that operates a mechanical lock. A remote sends commands when its buttons are pressed. A proximity key supports an equipped vehicle’s passive-entry or start-detection functions. An immobilizer credential is the electronic identity the vehicle recognizes for its starting authorization. Several of these may share one housing, but a successful test of one function does not establish the others.
For an OEM example, Ford describes an intelligent-access transmitter with a removable blade for mechanical unlocking and separate electronic functions. Identify the vehicle before selecting the part
Record the VIN from the vehicle and reconcile it with the authorized job documents. Record model year, model, original sales market, and relevant equipment. Model year and calendar production date are different fields; retain both when the catalog requests them. A vehicle currently located in the United States may originally have been supplied to another market. Its present location is not sufficient evidence of its original specification.

Read part numbers as evidence
OEM means original equipment manufacturer. An OEM service part number identifies a part in the manufacturer’s parts system. A number molded into a case, a supplier’s stock number, and a marketplace listing title may serve different purposes. Copy the entire identifier, including suffixes, and label its origin in the work record. A photo without a transcription invites a later reading error.
Request a catalog application for the specific vehicle and desired functions. If the catalog shows a supersession, meaning one service part replaces another, preserve that relationship and any conditions. Do not assume that a newer-looking number replaces every older version. If the candidate is aftermarket, request its manufacturer’s documented cross-reference and application conditions. Keep uncertainty visible instead of converting a seller’s broad model list into a confirmed fitment.
Understand the limits of an FCC ID
An FCC ID combines a grantee code with an equipment product code and identifies equipment within the certification system. FCC certification addresses the Commission’s technical requirements; it is not an OEM vehicle-compatibility approval. Therefore, the inference that a matching FCC ID proves every vehicle function will work goes beyond what the identifier establishes. FCC: identifier and limitations on grants.
Record an FCC ID as one supporting field. Frequency information, where documented, is another. Neither replaces confirmation of the part application, electronic system, market, requested features, or acceptable new-versus-used part condition. Likewise, identical button artwork is a visual clue, not an engineering specification. A replacement housing also makes case appearance weaker evidence of the electronics inside.
Hypothetical case: two similar candidates
A customer requests a spare that performs the same four documented functions as the existing key. Candidate A has the same case and FCC ID but no confirmed part application. Candidate B has a different printed service number, with a catalog record explicitly replacing the original number for the recorded VIN and equipment.
The technician records Candidate A as unverified. Candidate B has stronger application evidence, but preparation requirements and final functional testing remain outstanding. The defensible note is “catalog application confirmed; operation pending,” not “guaranteed because the numbers match.” This wording separates research completed from work still required.
Common mistakes
- Using registration year where a catalog asks for model year.
- Assuming a familiar shell identifies the circuit board inside.
- Dropping a part-number suffix during ordering.
- Promising remote start because the candidate has a matching button.
- Testing only starting and calling the entire key complete.
Practice: classify the evidence
A replacement blade turns the door lock. The remote housing matches the original, and the seller lists the vehicle model. What is confirmed, and what remains unknown?

Mechanical operation in that tested lock is confirmed. The photographs and seller list are leads for further research. Electronic compatibility, market application, part-number relationship, enrollment eligibility, and requested remote or proximity functions remain unverified. Obtain vehicle-specific application evidence and document a separate acceptance check for each requested function.
