Training teaches a skill.

A class or supervised learning program provides instruction and practice. A certificate of completion usually documents the provider's stated course outcome. Read the exact wording: attending a course does not automatically create a professional credential or permission to operate a business.

Certification assesses a defined standard.

A professional certification is awarded under an organization's own requirements. ALOA, for example, operates the Proficiency Registration Program. Its Certified Registered Locksmith designation requires passing the mandatory examination and two elective examinations. Review ALOA's current requirements directly before planning an examination route.

Do not assume every use of the word “certified” describes the same assessment. Ask who issues the credential, what is tested, and how the result can be verified.

Licensing is a government requirement.

Licensing and registration requirements depend on the jurisdiction and the role. Rules for a locksmith company may differ from those for an employee. A professional certification does not automatically satisfy those requirements.

As starting examples, California's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services publishes separate information for locksmith companies and locksmith employees. Texas's Department of Public Safety handles locksmith regulation through its Private Security program. Follow the current official instructions for your own location; these examples are not a complete state-by-state list.

Ask these questions before paying for a course.

• Is the award a completion certificate or an independently assessed professional certification?
• Are examinations included, optional, or arranged separately?
• Does the provider identify a specific state requirement it satisfies?
• Can the relevant agency confirm that claim?
• What practical experience or additional steps will still be needed?

Keep a short requirements record.

Write down your intended role and location, the official agency, the applicable license or registration, and the date you checked. Save the relevant application instructions. If you plan to employ others or work across state lines, ask the agencies how those plans affect the requirements.

A useful way to separate the terms: training is about learning, certification is about meeting a credential's standard, and licensing is about the government's rules for a particular activity.
